Case Study of Scar Tissue Injury

Bueno was kicked in the chest resulting in a contusion swelling to the approximate size and shape of a football.
The vet put a drain tube in.  I saw the horse one month post injury.  The remaining scar tissue was approximately 8" in
circumference and 8" long.  It felt hard, firm, and immovable.  The location was on the transverse plane of the right
descending pectoral, running into the right brachiocephalicus and humerus.

I treated Bueno on 8/11/2007, 8/18 and 9/4.  After ONLY three massage and photon therapy sessions, the scar
tissue was reduced to 1 1/2" diameter at the widest point on the descending pectoral to a fine line of rigid tissue on
the brachiocephalicus.  The remaining scar tissue was freely movable, and not attached to the underlying muscle and
fascia.  I also used Aroma Siez and Lavender essential oils(diluted).  Massage techniques used were petrissage,
friction, and myofascial release.
The client was an active participant with the healing.     Between therapy sessions she used massage techniques
that I taught her and she applied the essential oils and a fomentation.

When I first examined the large amount of scar tissue, my first impression was to use ultrasound.  However, Dr.
Mrad D.V.M. recommended massage therapy.  I had never attempted to break-up such a large mass of scar tissue.
The results were phenomenal.  A huge success!
